Perhaps Mr. Spielberg called and told him to shut his trap...

Loved Transformers (and even The Island for that matter), but I this guy is completely full of shit.

I'll blog about my first experience with HD DVD soon though...

I am still holding off until the war is over.
I bought a cheap little HDMI upconvert DVD player and my everyday DVDs look great. With close to 1000 titles, I do not want to even think about replacing them.

They convert to 720p (some better than others) and that is fine for me. The biggest challenge I have now is that my Home Theatre system looks like crap (on my HDTV)in comparission even though it was high end less than 2 years ago.

I'm in no hurry to replace most of mine (though I have nowhere near a thousand!). Which up-convert player do you have? Diana is looking for one, and I'd like to steer her toward one if possible. The Xbox 360 is a great up-converter for standard def DVD's, much better than I would have expected. They're just a little bit soft, but still very clean in terms of picture quality.

Look at the Oppo Digital upconverting DVD players. I have the DV-970HD. It does an excellent job.

I'd tell you to buy the one we have, but a quick scan on bestbuy.com shows that they've since upgraded to a new model. Ours is on clearance for $29.99. We paid $150. Ouch.

Mine is actually a cheap Magnavox model I picked up at the evil empire for about $80. I picked it because it came with an HDMI cable and when I compared pictures it out performed a much more expensive model that did not have an HDMI cable included.

I knew going into the process I did not want to spend too much, as it was a somewhat risky purchase. But for $80, I didn't have too much to lose.
